![]() ![]() During the war, only twenty-one corporations received more government money than Grumman. By the time of World War II, Grumman was well positioned for war production. ![]() The Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation began production in January 1930, banking on contracts from the U.S. The key to the Grumman canoe was that aluminum skin, which came directly from Grumman’s other, larger industry: aircraft. It was lighter, stronger, and could carry heavier loads than the wooden Maine canoes on which it was patterned, and duck hunters flocked to it.* So did recreational boaters, for its riveted aluminum skin withstood casual knocks far better than wooden or bark canoes could. ![]() In 1944, the Grumman canoe took the small boat world by storm. ![]()
